Where to start… For twenty-two years I ran the Haas Scholars Program, an undergraduate research program at UC Berkeley. Ilmo was in the 2005-2006 cohort, which turned out to be one of the most fun and cohesive cohorts ever. I remember our weekly colloquium meetings being filled with laughter. Of course, Ilmo was essential in setting that tone, from the very first moment when he explained how to remember his name by saying “It’s like ‘Tickle me Elmo’, but with an I”. He was always quick with a kind word or humorous remark, and also set a great tone by taking his project seriously and doing a fantastic job. He was proud to be first generation college, and was one of the most extroverted and socially intelligent people I ever met. This was despite being Finnish (his words, not mine!). He added so much light to this world! I hope Hayzell and Cal can continue this legacy.
