To Ilmo’s Family,
I am deeply saddened by Ilmo’s passing and want to share with you the impact he had on me in the short time I was fortunate enough to know him. Ilmo was one of the first people I met when interviewing for my role on the Core ML team. From that very first conversation, he put me at ease, and our connection felt effortless. Every Monday, I had the honor of a 1:1 with Ilmo, and those meetings became one of the highlights of my week.
At first, he guided me with patient explanations, helping me navigate unfamiliar terminology and assuring me that I belonged on the team and at Google. His kindness and support became my anchor. Over time, our conversations shifted, and he would share stories of the weekend adventures he had with you. I could see the joy he took in being a father as he proudly described Cal’s creativity, intelligence, and the latest LEGO masterpiece. It was clear how deeply he loved and cherished you both, and I admired him not just as a colleague but as a father and a friend.
Ilmo had a unique way of reminding me that while work is important, taking care of oneself and those we love is even more so. As someone who also lost a parent at a young age, I understand a bit of the journey ahead. You will see Ilmo’s influence in every season, hear him in a favorite song, feel him in nature, and remember him in life’s little moments.
In the words of Winnie the Pooh, “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.” May the love and memories you shared with Ilmo bring you comfort, and may his legacy live on through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
With all my sympathy,
Amber
