I first met Ilmo in 2008 when we were both introduced as the newest graduate students in the Experimental Psychology department at Oxford. From that moment, Ilmo and Hayzell became more than friends; they became people I could rely on for anything, whether about life, academics, or simply sharing a laugh. Their style was unforgettable; they would arrive at Oxford dinners dressed in the most exquisite outfits, always bringing a touch of class and warmth.
I had the privilege of enjoying their creative culinary talents— like Ilmo’s zucchini spaghetti, a dish that looked as incredible as it tasted. Spending time with Ilmo and Hayzell felt like home. I came to see them as my big brother and sister, sharing similar backgrounds and values rooted in hard work, optimism, and a touch of luck.
Years later, when I got married, I was deeply grateful they could join me at my legal ceremony in San Francisco. Ilmo’s humor, his wit, and his unshakeable optimism will always stay with me. He had this rare ability to light up a room and make everyone feel at ease.
Thank you, Ilmo, for every lesson, every laugh, and every precious moment. You’ll be deeply missed, but your spirit and the joy you brought to those around you will always live on
