An Incredible Mentor

Ilmo was an extraordinary mentor who profoundly shaped my intellectual journey and professional growth. While I was studying abroad at Oxford, he served as both tutor and instructor, stretching my intellectual curiosity and sparking my deep interest in psychology, human behavior, and the philosophy of science. Our sessions—sometimes held in his apartment (I believe Hayzell was pregnant at the time!)—were a highlight of my experience. I’ll never forget the way his eyes lit up as he connected seemingly unrelated ideas, weaving them into the most fascinating discussions. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he had a remarkable way of making complex topics both accessible and exciting.

Even after Oxford, Ilmo continued to mentor me, offering unwavering support and guidance during pivotal moments in my career. When I first applied for a job at Google, he made time to coach me through the interview process, instilling confidence and offering practical advice. Although that attempt didn’t pan out, Ilmo continued to provide unwavering support. Years later in grad school, as I pursued an internship at Waymo just before COVID, he again went above and beyond, sharing insights about his role and the company to help me succeed – and ultimately get the position.

Ilmo’s generosity, selflessness, and enthusiasm were matched by his boundless optimism, and his ideals have left a mark on me and so many others. I feel deeply grateful to have known him and will carry his legacy forward by striving to embody the same curiosity, kindness, and idealism that he so quinessentially exemplified.
